Weekly Email 1-28-11

The other night we all went to sleep in NYC thinking that the expected snow storm would be the 3-5" predicted.  Well things took a turn and when we got up there were 19" in Central Park.
The City was nice and quiet as school was canceled and even all bus service was canceled.

I had to get out for a walk and was able to catch some of the scenes around town.

Snowboarding Kids

Weekly Email 1-21-11

Perhaps many of you are the younger sibling in the family.  I assume growing up you had your share of fights with the older brothers and sisters.

This week at my 10 yr old nephew's birthday party I saw how the 8 yr old nephew gets picked on as he works his way into the party fun.

He had a great time with the older guys who he is friends with - but at every turn there was a dig or push.  If you like check out the video and notice the leg stuck out to trip him on the snowboard - caught !

You Find All Types in NYC

Just as I passed by the skating rink at Bryant Park - who knew I'd see Tinker Bell!

I think as city dwellers we sometimes forget that snow really is white.
Only a few hours after it hits our streets it takes on a special shade of gray.
I guess the takeaway is that we sure do have a lot of dirt on our streets - mixed in with a lot of other items I can't begin to list.

So next time the white stuff falls - remember to take in the look of fresh snow.

Pure as Driven Snow

The latest snow led to the usual white look of the City.  One of the cars nearby had a really nice layer of snow which showed how much snow dropped on us.  The other shot of the slush is more of a study of what made those magenta highlights?  I'm not sure if it is from the CCD or a combination of oils and water in the slush.

New York City Drive Time

I decided to try out a time lapse of my drive to Long Island this week. See if you can figure out the route.

Some of you may be familiar with the Polar Bear Swim on Jan 1.  This year was a nice warm one for them with the temp of the water about 40 and the air was around 45.

The area of Coney Island was buzzing with all sorts of characters.  That should not surprise anyone who knows the area - but to see thousands of people on the beach is a neat experience.  Lots of shots up on the blog and here are a few to show the scene.   Have a good weekend!

The Street Begins to Clear

The recent snowstorm led to a week of delays in trash pick up.  This is one of the cleanest areas I've seen and we are now basically garbage free and snow free.

Coney Island Polar Bear Swim

New Year's Day is a neat one down on Coney Island.  It is amazing how many people take the frigid plunge in the Atlantic Ocean on Jan 1.   I was told the water is about 38 degrees.
